Electric cars to make noises

Electric vehicles should make noises which alert pedestrians of their presence, according to Federal Authorities in the U.S.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is moving to require all electric and hybrid vehicles to create noise at up to 19 miles per hour. Above that speed, cars make enough sound due to wind-speed and tyre noise that they have no trouble being heard. However, will this allow drivers to choose their vehicle noise, fancy a sports car, truck or sci-fi vehicle sound track today? Could innovative ITS features be used to further enhance the warning to other users?
