Samsung’s Plans for Self-Driving Cars

Samsung's Plans for Self-Driving Cars

Samsung have obtained a license to test self-driving cars in California, which has fuelled speculation about what their plans are for this sector. However, it recently announced plans to work with Harman International to integrate its AI assistant 'Bixby' into the Harman in-vehicle system, so it therefore looks more likely that their plans are to develop system platforms for vehicle manufacturers rather than producing vehicles in their own right.

Intelligent Mobility Data Hub

Intelligent Mobility Data Hub

The Transport Systems Catapult (TSC) has announced the launch of the Intelligent Mobility Data Hub (IMDH), which provides a neutral, secure platform for transport organisations to allow access and analysis of their data. The IMDH stores data sets from government organisations, transport and technology businesses. The launch follows the concerns expressed by the TSC that "innovation in transport is at risk because data is not being shared in the sector", and was justified by a study by Deloitte and the Open Data Institute that £14bn of potential benefits to the UK could be gained from better use of data.

Ethical Plan for Automated Vehicles

Ethical Plan for Automated Vehicles

The German Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) commissioned a report from their Ethics Commission on Automated Driving, to report on the ethics required for implementing self-driving vehicles. The Committee's recommendations include; Automated and networked driving is ethically necessary if the systems cause fewer accidents than human drivers (positive risk assessment); Damage to property must take precedence over personal injury, where in hazardous situations, the protection of human life must always have top priority; In the case of unavoidable accidents, any distinction between people according to personal characteristics, such as age, gender, physical or mental constitution, is not permissible; In every driving situation, it is necessary to clearly define and identify who is responsible for the driving task - the human being or the computer, and that must be documented and stored to clarify possible liability issues; Drivers must always be able to decide themselves whether their vehicle data are to be forwarded and used by others (data sovereignty).

New Porsche Electric Truck

New Porsche Electric Truck

A pilot project is underway at the Porsche factory in Leipzig to test the use of a fully electric truck under real life conditions at the plant. The truck will be used on a route between the logistics centre and the assembly supply centre. The truck is charged whilst it is being loaded using a 150kW fast charger, which allows the vehicle to have a range of 70 km and a top speed of 85 kph. The project is part of the technology programme 'Information and communication technology for electric mobility III: Integrating commercial e-vehicles in logistics, energy, and mobility infrastructure', which is run by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

New Jaguar E-type

Lastly, we look at a video of what can only be described as the extraordinary reimagining of one of the most iconic cars in the world, which has been re-engineered by Jaguar Land Rover to use a zero-emission electric XK 330 drivetrain. The 'Classic' develops 220kW, with a respectable 0-100 kmh in 5.5 secs.
