“As we gather in Gangneung for the 2026 ITS World Congress, it is a pleasure to welcome the global ITS community to a country that has become a benchmark for intelligent mobility. South Korea’s commitment to innovation, its readiness to test and deploy new solutions at scale, and its strong culture of collaboration make it an inspiring host for this year’s Congress.

For ERTICO – ITS Europe, this moment carries particular significance as we celebrate our 35th anniversary. Founded in 1991 through the cooperation of 15 industry leaders and public authorities, under the auspices of the European Commission, ERTICO has been guided by a clear ambition from the outset: to bring together the people, expertise, ideas and partnerships needed to turn innovation into real-world deployment.

Over three and a half decades, ERTICO has contributed to the evolution of the ITS sector, connecting public and private stakeholders, advancing European innovation and creating platforms where collaboration can translate into tangible impact. The ITS Congresses have been an important part of this journey, bringing the international mobility community together to exchange knowledge, experience new technologies and connect policy, innovation and deployment.

Standing here in Gangneung, surrounded by Partners, colleagues and friends from across the world, we have an opportunity not only to celebrate how far we have come, but also to look ahead. The mobility landscape continues to evolve, but the need for shared ambition, knowledge and action remains as relevant today as it was when ERTICO was founded 35 years ago.

Our participation this week is part of that continuing journey. From Gangneung, the road leads towards Birmingham, where the 2027 ITS World Congress will bring the global ITS community to the United Kingdom. Preparations are already underway, and the connections and momentum built here in Korea will carry into the year ahead. In the following article, we look more closely at that journey and how Europe is preparing for its next moment on the global stage.”
